Detroit, MI

Mayor Mike Duggan and the City of Detroit are committed to welcoming and supporting immigrants. In October 2015, Mayor Duggan worked with key stakeholders to create the Office of Immigrant Affairs (OIA) to help support new and existing and immigrant communities by creating a welcoming and inclusive environment, ensuring access to city and local resources, and promoting economic development within these communities. OIA collaborates with federal, state, and local governing bodies, as well as with community organizations and social service providers committed to diversity, inclusion, and immigrant integration. Since its inception, OIA has led many immigrant related initiatives including creating and executing a citywide refugee resettlement strategy and launching Detroit’s first municipal ID program.

Additionally, the City of Detroit has helped naturalize hundreds of immigrants. For the past two years, the City’s Immigration Task Force has hosted an annual naturalization ceremony for its newest citizens. The ceremony, which takes place at the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center, reinforces Detroit’s commitment to remain a welcoming city for all its residents.
